Federal funding comes in a variety of forms. Discretionary Programs and Earmarks, Formula Programs and Supplemental Services are a few. Each type of funding requires a different type of application process or proposal.

The Discretionary or Earmark funding may be announced as a competition but often the money is just given to a project. If you have a big idea on how to fill a need in your community get the ear of your public officials or talk to the administrative agencies directly involved. You may be given the funding with as little as a conversation or written proposal.

Formula Programs require the applicants to submit their proposals to the state. The Federal funds are funneled through the states. Frequently, The state decides how it wishes to disburse the funds. Connect with the state agency that best reflects your project. For example: if you are trying to fund a facility for the homeless connect with the Housing Department of your state.

Supplemental Services This money is distributed to tutoring programs that supplement the schools curriculum. Only school districts with low performance as judged by the No Child Left Behind criteria may use these tutoring programs. The tutoring programs apply for the funding. Though this is not grant money it is often confused with the grant funds.

According to recent articles non-profits are finding their funds with held! Many states have requirements that endowments retain a certain bank balance. As donations dwindle and the stock market falls, the money held in trust for these non-profits has shrunk.

Considered by many as an emergency fund, they are finding that they are not allowed to use it in the current emergency.

Are you effected by this? Check with your accountant or the non-profit arm of your state.

Many non-profits are reacting by increasing their fund raising efforts. Having a professional grant writer can make all the difference in your success as the competition grows for those funds.

Funding Success is offering 50% March Madness sale on their grant search services. A $150 value!

You’ve probably received the emails or mailers. The lead headline tells you that the federal government is giving away millions and that you qualify. The adds usually go on to say that you can finance your business, remodel your house or pay off bills. All you have to do is contact the company and they will check to see if you qualify.

Inevitably you do! And, oh yes, now send them a fee for the information. Some will even offer to write the grant proposal or letter for you.

As a professional grant writer and educator I cringe every time I see those commercials. I worry how many people are wasting their money. There are two government sites where you can locate this information free.

If you think you qualify for federal grants go to www.grants.gov . Put your key words into their search engine and see if there is money for you. If you find something then great!

Double-check the eligibility section and the deadline. If it still looks doable you will have to register for grants.gov as an individual. Just follow the directions. If you need help send me an email. It will take a few days to a few weeks before you are approved. In the meantime download the application and get started.

If you really don’t want to be bothered checking for your self than certainly pay a grant writing company to do the searches or to write the proposal for you. Be sure to know what you are getting for your money.

Most of the ads are going to send you information on government benefits programs. These are not grants but you still need to qualify. You can locate this information free at http://www.govbenefits.gov .
