FREE MONEY
February 24, 2009
You’ve probably received the emails or mailers. The lead headline tells you that the federal government is giving away millions and that you qualify. The adds usually go on to say that you can finance your business, remodel your house or pay off bills. All you have to do is contact the company and they will check to see if you qualify.
Inevitably you do! And, oh yes, now send them a fee for the information. Some will even offer to write the grant proposal or letter for you.
As a professional grant writer and educator I cringe every time I see those commercials. I worry how many people are wasting their money. There are two government sites where you can locate this information free.
If you think you qualify for federal grants go to www.grants.gov . Put your key words into their search engine and see if there is money for you. If you find something then great!
Double-check the eligibility section and the deadline. If it still looks doable you will have to register for grants.gov as an individual. Just follow the directions. If you need help send me an email. It will take a few days to a few weeks before you are approved. In the meantime download the application and get started.
If you really don’t want to be bothered checking for your self than certainly pay a grant writing company to do the searches or to write the proposal for you. Be sure to know what you are getting for your money.
Most of the ads are going to send you information on government benefits programs. These are not grants but you still need to qualify. You can locate this information free at http://www.govbenefits.gov .
